I have made two Ethel tops and love them both. One is blue linen and the other a chartreuse gingham.
This will be my new go to pattern for tops. I will size down next time.

    I love SA patterns l.

I made the first wearable toile in a dusky pink poly cotton, the overall look was okay but as many have said the instructions are few and vague. I ended up turning the neck band to the right side and attempted to top stitch. It’s looks ok but! Second was a shirting material and I made all the necessary adjustments for me and watch a you tube video to find out how the arms are done. Really pleased with this one. I double the hem band to give it extra length and really prefer this type of finish. Love it and can’t wait to to make it in more expensive linen garment.

I made the Ethel twice, using fabrics from my stash. The first is a crisp pink cotton Marimekko print purchased in Finland, and the second in a soft solid purple silk from Élégance. Both turned out well, the first one summery and youthful, the second elegant with black silk pants. I changed the method somewhat, attaching the arm facing before sewing up the side seams, which allowed very accurate alignment. The multi-size pattern allows me to sew for friends, so I expect to make the Ethel again.

According to the size chart I am size 12, but bought a size 10 pattern after reading some of the reviews.
However, after sizing it down to size 8 it is still too HUGE on me although this pattern is meant to be loose fitting. I am short and slightly plumb. Therefore I cannot afford to wear anything oversized. The problem with sizing is also experienced with other StyleArc patterns I have bought. They are simply not true to size.
The instructions on the armhole facings are also not very clear. I hence changed the instructions altogether and did not use a facing at all and simply fold up the seam allowance at the armholes.

What a classic design! love the style and top stitching detail. the top was easy to put together. I made it out of a cotton linen blend with a bit of heft.

This was my first SA pattern that I downloaded from the interwebs. I guaranteed the fit by making a mockup first. I really love that SA gives finish dimensions. This is critical to get a great fit.

    Nice looking top!
Definitely could size down 1-2 sizes, i Made the size 14 but will try making the size 12 next.
I used a cotton linen blend which looked nice and a bit boho, my next one will be in a crepe for a dressier look.
I slightly shortened it at the hem as it was a bit longer than I like.
All in all, I love how this turned out and I would recommend this design 👌🏽

Love this pattern. Made it out of strong cotton fabric and it sitd really well. I will be making another maybe out of linen which would be a little dropper and added some length. I’m 5’10 and it a little short when lifting my arms up.

I love the style of the pattern and it looks especially good in linen. I cut three inches off the bottom before sewing on the band as it was a bit long for me. The neck is a boat neck rather than round which is OK once you get used to it. I only rated it three stars as there is not enough details in the directions, when it comes to the neck band and the arm bands. If there were more detailed instructions, it would help a lot.

I made the Ethel top in a beautiful emerald green linen and am so pleased with it. I have only recently discovered Style Arc patterns and everything I have made so far has been great. After looking at the finished measurements on the Ethel top I decided to go a size smaller, usually a size 16 but went for a 14 this time and the fit is good.

this pattern fits very big. I ordered a 14 which looked right from the fitting chart. Sure glad they send a 12, 14 and 16 as the 12 may be too big as well. I may have to try printing at 95% or 90% to get a good fit. Other than the sizing issues, I found the pdf was the best that I have ever put together. Thank you for making the pattern so easy to construct. The directions were quite clear except for the facing around the arm openings. I had to go online to find a blogger’s directions to get that to work. the three pieces for the front and for the back will lend to many different variations using different fabrics which I enjoy doing.

How Do I Know What Size I Am?

Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.

  1. When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
  2. Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
  3. When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
  4. You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:
A. Shoulder Breadth

Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.

B. Upper Arm Girth

This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.

C. Bust

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.

D. Waist

This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.

E. Hip

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.
