Stylish pull on pant with a lovely shaped leg.

Description

This is a great pant with a lovely shaped leg, not too slim and not too wide, just right. The flat front waist band keeps the tummy area flat, the elastic back band allows it to pull on and wear it with comfort. There are optional welt pockets.

For assistance with sewing the pockets see this pocket tutorial

These pants have a nice fit around the waist/hip/thigh – skims over, fitted without being tight. Love that they are full length, it seems like a lot of trousers are cropped nowadays. Pattern pieces fit together well (welt pockets, waistbands). The pockets are integrated into a front facing, great feature. Overall very happy with these as a work trouser in lightweight wool.

This was my first time making a welt pocket – written instructions were minimal and it took a lot of staring at the pictures and messing around the with fabric to see how it worked. I ended up hand finishing the welts and pocket bag attachment which looked much better than anything I could get with my machine. My other modification was to assemble the front of the pants, then the back (up through attaching one end of the elastic), then sewing side seams, finishing the casing and attaching the other side of the elastic, and then doing the inseam.

The order of operations I used for the back was:

    – fold under one long end of the back waistband by 1/4” and press
    – sew unpressed side of back waistband to joined back legs
    – sew up side seams, matching up notches and top of front waistband to middle fold in back waistband
    – finish back elastic casing edges so it’s a solid join to front once flipped right side out, sew one edge of elastic
    – close back waistband casing over, will overlap with existing seam by 1/8”
    – hand baste, stitch in ditch to about 4” from end
    – pull elastic through, join other end of the elastic, finish stitch in the ditch seam
    – topstitch

This method worked a lot better for me than what was printed in the pattern.

The instructions for the welt pockets on these are extremely confusing so I’m not sure I got them right. That apart, they fit beautifully after I shorted the front crotch rise. Perfect for work.

These are a lovely fitting pair of pants. The legs hang nicely and the fit around the hips is flattering…not tight but falls over this area nicely. I just threaded the elastic through the back waistband and secured it with a line of stitching at the centre back. To be honest, I did struggle with the instructions for the welt pockets. It took me ages to try to work out what they were saying. I eventually worked it out but drew on other tutorials I’d seen to help me. My pockets are not perfect, but I will make another pair.

Talia is a basic pattern with elastic waist.
Had to make alterations to the hip and thigh- pattern stayed well balanced.
Pockets (did not sew the placket.)- do not gape at the side- flat over the tummy.
Easy to sew, used a youtube video for the elastic in waist- looks very neat.
Will try a short pants next.

I made 1 pair of pants using this pattern, the fit was good. The back elasticated waist lacked instructions on how to install it. But everything all is good.

How Do I Know What Size I Am?

Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.

  1. When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
  2. Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
  3. When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
  4. You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:
A. Shoulder Breadth

Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.

B. Upper Arm Girth

This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.

C. Bust

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.

D. Waist

This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.

E. Hip

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.
