Shop the Mary-Ann Skirt
CONSTRUCTION:
Neaten each centre front edge of Front Skirt (2) separately using an overlocker/serger. With RST, sew the centre front seams together, press the seam open and sew a 6mm (1/4”) top stitch to each side of the seam.
Fuse the front pocket openings using Front pocket Turn-Back Fuse (6).
With RST and notches aligned, sew the Pocket Bag (5) to the front pocket openings.
Neaten using an overlocker/serger and press toward the pocket. Sew an understitch on the side of the pocket bag.
Fold front skirt pocket opening along the fold line toward the inside and press down. Sew a 6mm (1/4”) top stitch along the folded edge of the pocket opening.
Sew the pocket bearer to the pocket bag around the outer edges. Neaten with overlocker/serger.
Pin the pocket sides to the side seams and the top of the pocket to the waist seam, baste into place and press.
Sew the darts in Back Skirt (1) and press toward the centre back.
Neaten each centre back seam separately using overlocker/serger.
With RST, sew the front to back at the side seams. Neaten with overlocker/serger and press toward the back.
With WST, fold the Waistband (3) in half lengthways and press. Neaten one long edge of the waistband using an overlocker/serger.
With RST pin the raw edge of the waist band to the top of the skirt, matching notches and sew. Press toward the waistband.
Using an invisible zipper foot, carefully sew the invisible zip to the centre back of the skirt and waistband below the pressed edge. (See our Zip – Invisible Zip tutorial on the Style Arc website).
Change back to the standard presser foot and sew the remainder of the centre back seam. Press the centre back seam open and lightly press the zip.
With the zip teeth facing toward the side seam, fold the waistband at the pressed edge, with RST, sandwiching the zip tape.
Sew the end of the waistband into place.
Turn out to the right side, press.
Pin the inner waistband into place and sew using a ditch stitch.
Neaten the hem using an overlocker/serger, turn to the inside to your preferred personal length and finish with a top stitch or blind stitch.
Trim any loose threads and carefully press your new skirt!
