56,000 Women. One Powerful Sewing Community. IWD 2026

Celebrating Women Who Sew, Create & Inspire this IWD

Sometimes the most powerful communities begin with a simple question.

In 2018, Judith (@JudithRosalind) wondered: “Is there a space for sewists over 50?” What followed was the creation of @SewOver50 — now the largest community of its kind, bringing together more than 56,000 makers from around the world.

This International Women’s Week, we’re proud to celebrate this incredible community at Style Arc. Read on to learn more about this inspiring group of women.

Q1: How did @SewOver50 start?
A call-out from Judith (@JudithRosalind) in 2018 asked on Instagram, “Is there a space for sewers over 50?” At a time when this demographic was rarely seen, the answer was a resounding yes. From that simple question, @SewOver50 was created and has since grown into the largest sewing community of its kind, now with over 56k members.

Q2: What makes the community so special?
The growth has been phenomenal. @SewOver50 became a source of solace and calm, particularly during the difficult years of 2020/21 when many people felt isolated. Meaningful bonds formed between sewists, and for many, these have evolved into real-life friendships. Mutual respect, support, and the sharing of skills are the hallmarks of the community. The aim is to lift others, promote visibility for mature sewists, and challenge the youth-focused pattern industry.

Q3: What advice do you have for sewists wanting to get involved?
Like all sewists, indulging your passion is key. Even planning just 20 minutes a day can restore balance, help you make steady progress, and soothe the soul. The @SewOver50 editors work hard to bring relevant topics, authenticity, and a welcoming safe space. We hope to inspire younger sewists so they never have to ask, “Where are we?”

Led by Sandy (@SunnyDayz06), SewOver50 is supported by a dedicated team of volunteer editors who help nurture and grow this remarkable community.

Editors include Judith, Maria (@VeloSews), Tricia (@MorrisSews), Ruthie (@SewManyFlowers), Lena (@ThatLenaKing), Sue (@SueLeighAtkins), Melanie (@MelanieKeane), Byrd (@YogaByrdSews), Tomasa (@SewMuchFashion), Elke (@SewThreadBear) and Lou (@SewMuchToDesign), Stephanie (@AWintersTell).

Alongside them, additional volunteer editors generously contribute their time and energy behind the scenes, helping keep the community welcoming, inspiring and thriving.
