I love the look of this and ended up with a dress I like. I think I chose a fabric that didn’t drape enough and I went down a size as well as took out heaps of volume as suggested in very helpful reviews.
I’m for petite Style Arc so we smaller girls can look as good as the bigger sizes in the reviews and photos. Please, pretty please.

I do love this dress and I also do love an oversized fit on me but I made the size according to the chart and it was way, way too big. I even checked the finished measurement chart which said my size was a 118cm finished bust measurement, well once made I found that the actual finished bust measurement was 129cm – that is a huge difference. I used the correct seam allowance so this wasn’t my error.

Choose one size smaller, shortened it because I’m 163 cm tall.. Needed to move the pockets 10 cm up. Made adjustment for back and shoulder as I always do.
Easy dress to make. The style is a little out of my comfort sone, so have not used it yet….

I love the style of this dress.
I made one in double gauze after reading some reviews on instagram and it is now my go to summer dress.
I am a petite plus size, and for my next one (of many I think), I will size down one size. I did shorten the skirt just below the bodice, and that raised the pockets which is good, as they would have been a bit low for me otherwise.
I am loving Style Arc patterns!

I made this dress for my sister. I had to shorten the length for her because she is vertically challenged!!!!! She loves it and it looks fabulous on her. I made it out of rayon. I will make it again for myself for next summer.

Lovely design. I made it in light linen, two colours as I was using up existing fabric. Very easy to sew.

In the linen, the pockets make the seam stick out a bit rather than drape, I’ll omit them next time I make it.

There were no instructions to fit thr band, but it was not hard. However, in a woven fabric I find that if I stride out my shins can be hobbled by the narower hem.

I’d like to make it in a crepe, or jersey – something with a lot of drape but no ironing!

I had mine made in a bold knit fabric and it looks fabulous. I choose to kept the sleeves plain and longer.
I have now brought other patterns and love them

Very easy pattern. I didn’t really follow the instructions because the pattern pieces spoke for themselves. I made it out of linnen and skipped the pockets. Length was perfect, next time I will make the front side parts a little bit smaller. But definitely will use the pattern again!

I made this for my mum and myself. We both went down one size after reading the reviews. We are also both 5’ 3”, so I took 3 inches off the length, and moved the pockets up 3 inches in compensation. Pleased with the result, but the pattern instructions are basic. I struggled to get the hem band to fit on my mums, so when I made mine, I stay stitched the hem before I started sewing. My instructions didn’t mention how to add the hem band at all, and the sleeve turn ups were another mystery. The pattern makes no mention of neatening, and with a dipped hem at the back I felt a more elegant solution was to enclose the hem in the band, otherwise you can see the neatening from the front. When I made mine I therefore enclosed the hem within the band, attaching it like bias binding.

After reading the reviews I sized it down, but is still too large. I am quite tall, but the pockets are still waaay too low. Also, I wouldn’t recommend it to beginners, since the instructions are very poor.

Love this pattern Making it a second time. I am only 5’2″ so needed to size it down as the skirt is just too long and big. Pockets need to be moved higher as well. With the dress I just completed I cut it down to a top and it is super cute. Now making it again with adjustments. This is a lovely dress.

Love the style of this dress, just perfect for me. My first was in a magnificent linen with a nice, simple floral border print that worked perfectly for the bottom. Moved the pockets us a bit to make them more useful for me. Waiting for spring to arrive so I can go about in this wonderful dress. Have two more lengths of fabric for the make up of more, and with these will use a plain linen and do some embellishing.

This is a terrific dress! It’s easy to cut and stitch up and looks terrific! Once it was cut out, the stitching took less than an hour! Next time, I’ll make it in a linen blend and raise the pockets a couple of inches. Even though I’m tall (5’11”), the pockets are a bit low for my comfort. I’ve read reviews in which people thought it was too large on top. I disagree with that, at least for me. The fit on top is perfect and the billowy style feels like it will be excellent for hot summer days. I also love the assymetric hem.

The Sydney dress was my first (of many more) patterns from Style Arc. I absolutely love the look! I agree with other reviewers that the pockets are way too low but this is an easy adjustment to make (although I didn’t realize just how low until I’d attached them and stitched the front/side panels and decided not to re-do them).. I’m 5’4″ and the overall length was perfect. I made a size 18 based on the bust measurement; however, the bodice was still too roomy so I took a bit out of the side–about 2 inches. In general, this was a very easy dress to make. Everything was quite straightforward–even the curved seams. I was afraid the bottom band would be difficult to attach but it was ridiculously easy. For my next make, I’ll work on the pocket placement.

A nice idea but It turned out way too large, too long and pockets too low. Also clearer notches would help as I had a bit of trouble working out which piece joins where. Should have read the reviews first. Not that easy to reduce the size once it is half completed.

PROS: Love the style and I found the pattern easy to understand and execute. I made a “trial” run with inexpensive fabric and will make another when I find something I truly love. For now, it’s great to wear as a “house dress”.

COULD BE BETTER: Even after shortening the pattern and moving the pockets up, they are still too low. When I make it again, I will move them up further.

I made the pattern bigger in the lower section since I’m a little “hippy” but it turns out I didn’t need to. When I make it again, I’ll adjust the sizing downward in that area. Based on the shape of the dress, you shouldn’t need to adjust sizing in this area.

NOTE: For my first attempt at this dress, I used very inexpensive cotton quilting fabric which comes in only 44″ wide. I was able to make the dress with just a bit more yardage by getting creative with how I laid out the pattern and folded the material. So don’t be afraid to try it with narrower material.

I made a toile in a size 28 and found it really, really voluminous in the skirt and slightly large in the bust/shoulders. I will definitely make again but will reduce the volume in the skirt. My first Style Arc pattern although I have already bought several others and am really excited to make them all! I’ve been sewing basic garments for years so found the instructions adequate.

The pattern is very well desgined but it did turn out a bit large. I made the back in a 14 and the front in a 16 to allow for a larger bust, but I should have done a 12 and 14 if not just a 12 (43″ bustline). If I make it again, I’ll definitely size down a little, shorten it by about 5″ and raise the pockets as they’re a tad too low for comfortable use (I’m 5’6″). I did use linen, but I also think it would look better in a fabric with a bit less body.

I really like this dress and I really like StyleArc patterns. I’ve made many. However, there are challenges. StyleArc directions are pretty miserable. You have to know what you’re doing before you read them. Also, the font is so tiny I had to rotate the page on my computer screen and then print a screen shot so I could read them. There is no excuse for this. StyleArc is not even paying for the paper they are printed on. What is on one page could easily be formatted onto two pages.

I have made many, many pdf patterns. This one had a whole new challenge I have never run into before, not even with a StyleArc pattern. The “tiles” are lined up with the very edge of the printer paper. Of course, our printers don’t print the very edge of the paper. So about 1/4″ of the pattern tile is not printed. Very confusing at first. Once I identified the challenge, it was actually easier because I didn’t have to trim one edge to tape it to the next. Weird.

One other issue I have is the width and variation in seam allowances. Most seam allowances were 3/8″. The neckline was 1/4″. I realize that StyleArc is in Australia and they probably have different customs. I respect that but at least they all should be the same. Less opportunity to screw up. Of course, I really like 5/8″ seams partly because I’m old and that’s what I’ve always sewn on but mostly because they give me more fabric to screw up on or make adjustments.

I am 5’3″ and shortened the dress 5″ which worked out well. Still below the knees in front. I needed to move the pockets up about 3″ to get them within reach of my short arms.

i ordered this pattern as a multi-sized download. as usual for StyleArc, the pattern went together well. I made two dresses from knits for a friend of mine. she is about 5’4″, so the high-low hemline doesn’t work so well. I evened off the bottom hem, and instead of adding the hemband as piece hanging from the bottom, i attached it and flipped it upwards towards the right side of the dress, attaching it around the whole bottom. it gave the lightweight knit a more weighty bottom, allowing the dress to keep its unusual shape. really comfortable dress. i would have liked to have bust point/hip point/waistline marked on the pattern. this is my request for all StyleArc patterns, as it would help us better plan for waist seams, bust darts, and pockets. not all of us are “model height”. thank you for the lovely style and easy construction!

Love this pattern! I made myself one and now most of my family are buying material and want one or 2 for Christmas 😆 Very big fit so just did smaller size and made the arms wider as I have very chonky upper arms.
I bought the 4-16 printed pattern and it’s great! Very easy to use!
I’m an experienced seamstress and they are very quick and easy! I have made 5 so far and after my first one I modified the pockets so I could reach them. So far have made from lightweight denim x 2, cotton linen x 2 and cotton sateen which was stretchy so I did a smaller size.
This pattern is great for me as I work at a school and need the coverage but will still be cool for summer.
I have worn mine with a waist belt too and looks very gathered and cute 👌🏻

I made this with a light knit fabric from my stash. After seeing others’ comments re size and studying the garment measurements on the website, I decided to make 2 sizes smaller than my normal size. I also took 2 inches off the length. It is very roomy without looking too baggy, but is still a little long. I will definitely make another one, but next time, I’ll adjust the pocket placement as I can’t reach the bottom of them when positioned as on the pattern. All in all, a very quick and easy design which is very comfortable to wear.

This was my first Style Arc dress and the first dress I’ve ever made. I found the instructions a little vague due to my lack of knowledge of sewing terms. But I got there.
I made the dress from 100% cotton as the print I needed came only in one type of fabric. It’s a little stiff and doesn’t drape delicately but it holds shape beautifully. I intend to make it again in a lighter fabric.
I’ll definitely be back for more!

I love the design, and the engineering to achieve the drape is perfect.

However, I did have some issues with this pattern:

    1. The length of the sideseams did not match up.
    2. The pocket positioning was about 3 cm too low, and the pocket bag too shallow.
    3. The circumference of the foldline for the sleeve cuff should be a few mm wider than the hem line to achieve a flat fold over the sleeve.
    4. The grade of the hemline is even from the smallest size to the largest size. It should be exponentially larger as the size increases. The larger sizes are often needed for taller people with a longer stride. As it is, the bottom circumference is too narrow to be comfortable for those with a long stride (like me). While a shorter larger person will not be limited by a wider bottom circumference, a taller larger person will be limited by a narrower bottom circumference.

I made two dresses from linen after making the necessary pattern adjustments, and I am very happy with them.

Lovely dress. Comes up generous sizewise, but I like that. I am tall and the shape looks best if you wear it with a swagger. I have already been stopped twice to ask where I got it from, which is a result when you live in London and are 61 years old! The first StyleArc pattern I have made and it came together really well. The instructions are, as others note, quite brief but I am fine with that.

I made it in double faced check cotton seersucker which is soft and drapes but is not flimsy, so it supports the cocoon shape well. I found the pockets dragged the front down though and messed up the drape, so I moved them to the side seams which is much better. I managed to get it all out of 2m of fabric, full length, including pockets and hem bands, by inserting a seam in the centre back skirt panel and being extremely crafty with my layout. If anyone can beat that, I will be surprised.

How Do I Know What Size I Am?

Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.

  1. When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
  2. Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
  3. When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
  4. You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:
A. Shoulder Breadth

Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.

B. Upper Arm Girth

This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.

C. Bust

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.

D. Waist

This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.

E. Hip

This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.
