I made a short sleeved version with about 10cm extra length from a very lightweight silk linen. Turned out great, I did raise the neckline depth a couple of cm, the measurements given for this seem to be very long.
I struggled a bit with the facings, but got there in the end, probably as I am not that keen on facings so I don’t often do them. I might try hacking this next time to have the pleats on the outside and maybe add a popover placket with a shirt collar, also thinking about having pleats on the back.
Loved the idea of having a template to cut out the front after the pleats have been sewn, great idea I will use again.

The Xanthe dress is a cute, swingy dress. It’s very comfortable to wear. The two criticisms that kept me from giving this five stars is the V-neckline is WAY lower than it appears in the drawings. It actually comes down past the top of the bridge of my bra (which isn’t exceptionally high). Also, the back of the under collar rolls out. I can’t keep the upper collar and under collar together even though I topstitched around them. I used a shifty rayon. This may not be a problem with a fabric with a bit more structure.

This is a brilliant pattern, but make sure you mark the pintucks accurately and then check the size against template when stitched. I posted the finished dress on The Great British Sewing Bee and it has received over 1,400 comments and likes! I have made it in opaque cotton lawn and also in two different striped ramie cotton which looks superb. It would also look nice with a few inches of shirring at the wrist rather than cuffs – just an option!

This dress came together really easily. However I left them collar off. Not a fan of collars. I made it in dark blue chambray and it falls beautifully. I bought some double gauze to make another one but unfortunately the fabric wasn’t wide enough. But luckily I have a drawer of style arc patterns so have made a semester dress instead 😊

Made this in linen with the long sleeve option and midi length. I chose a size smaller that I would normally and the fit is fine. The neck was a bit of a challenge, in my opinion it needs a bit more seam allowance in order to get a crisp V. The next one I make I’ll address this issue and maybe assemble the neck differently. I made it with no instructions as I hadn’t downloaded that file. The pleats were easy but I chose to put them on the outside to give a bit more interest so I controlled the volume at the bottom by sewing across all the pleats to secure them down. It’s got a 4 only due to the V neck construction.

I love a pin tuck!!! This dress came together well and is a comfortable wear. I measured at a straight size 12, but for the next make I will size down as there is more ease than I would like. I used a contrast for the facings and pockets and also contrast stitching for the pintucks. I can already see more Xanthe dresses in my future.

How Do I Know What Size I Am?
Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.
When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:
A. Shoulder Breadth
Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.
B. Upper Arm Girth
This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.
C. Bust
This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.
D. Waist
This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.
E. Hip
This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.
