The Gracie Coat sewing pattern is your new go-to for effortless outerwear. This unlined coat pattern offers two front options-a high round collar that can be worn open or standing, or a relaxed open front with revere collar. Designed with a modern boxy fit, dropped shoulders and a two-piece sleeve, it’s versatile and easy to wear. The choice of a wrap-only front or button front, and optional pockets, make it an excellent choice for a first coat project. And as a little extra? A bonus headscarf to complete the look!

Fabric Suggestions
Medium heavy weight woven fabric e.g. gabardine, denim, heavy linen, cotton drill, corduroy, boiled wool, tweed wool.
You could also use a Ponte knit.
Trims
7 x Buttons 29mm/45L size for the button up option OR 7 x 30mm press studs (snap fasteners)
Optional bias binding for seams 5cm wide, for an extra challenge. The length will depend on which seams you choose to bind.
I made the open neck version in a wool coating. My fabric was a little wider than 148cm so I was able to use the cutting layout for size 4-16 for my size 18 which used a lot less fabric.
I clean finished the facings with interfacing (by sewing the interfacing right sides together at 6mm on the finished sides before adhering it to the fabric) which gave a nice finish. I interfaced the hems and I realised later that I could have clean finished these too. I used a lightweight weft interfacing which didn’t make the fabric feel stiff but gave some support.
I followed the video for most of the coat, using my overlocker to finish the seams and hems. I found that by doing a lot of the preparation beforehand, the interfacing and overlocking, it went together easily.
The end result is a lovely coat that will be perfect for the transitional weather we are having at the moment. Where I live it gets cold at night but usually warms up in the daytime, apart from a few months of the year, so a coat like this works well as a layering piece.

How Do I Know What Size I Am?
Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.
When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:
A. Shoulder Breadth
Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.
B. Upper Arm Girth
This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.
C. Bust
This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.
D. Waist
This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.
E. Hip
This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.
