Choosing your pattern size is the most important step and we will help you determine this with these easy to follow steps.
- When taking your measurements ensure that you take them against your skin and not over clothing. One can wear a comfortable bra and knickers whilst measuring, as this will provide you with the most accurate measurements.
- Tape measure has to sit firmly around the points you are measuring. But be careful not to pull it too tight, as this will give you the incorrect size.
- When measuring circumferences (B, C, D, E) it is important to note that the tape measure must remain parallel to the floor. It is sometimes best to take the measurements in front of a mirror; this will help you see the angle of the tape measure.
- You will only require the basic body measurements to determine your pattern size which is indicated on our mannequin below:
A. Shoulder Breadth
Place the tape at the edge of the shoulder. Measure along the top of the shoulder blade/across the highest point of the shoulders to the other edge, following the natural slope and allow an extra finger for ease of any movement.
B. Upper Arm Girth
This point is taken as a circumference at your widest point of your upper arm.
C. Bust
This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the fullest part of your chest.
D. Waist
This point is taken as a circumference and taken at the smallest part of your waist.
E. Hip
This point is taken as a circumference parallel to the floor at the widest part of your hips.

I purchased a challis without knowing what to make out of it. What lots of indecision of what to make, I choose the Emerson dress and have no regrets with my choice. The PDF assembled quickly with pattern lines matching appropriately. The pattern directions were very clear making putting the dress together easy. I did not use any buttonholes with simply sewing the buttons on. The Emerson dress is similar to a design I wore many years ago. Timeless design and comfortable to wear.

Very nice pattern. Neckline sits beautifully. I shortened the sleeves to a simple short sleeve and ran the front band to waistline. Next time I will stitch front band closed and use buttons decoratively, it’s lose enough to go on over head. Nice cool, loose comfy dress.

Made two the first one was too small for my daughter but my daughter in law loved it. My daughter loved it too, although the size to fit her bigger breasts made it a bit too full around the waist, she added a belt and it looked great. Work up really easy but the collar was a bit small and I had to ease it in.

Well drafted pattern, true to size. I ran the button placket only through to the top of the skirt, and adjusted the skirt so it was a two-tiered maxi. Will make again but size up the bodice a couple of sizes as I’m keen on a more oversized look. Might also reshape and position the pockets so they’re secured into the waist seam.

This is a lovey, easy to sew pattern with lots of potential for variation. I added an a 12” ruffled tier to the bottom of the knee-length version and loved the effect. Made the dress worthy of twirling!
